Back to the Music

Always was one of my favourite songs...

Yes, I'm back to the music - silence isn't really my thing!

Today is forecast to be 32 degrees and it's already hot.  Fortunately I watered the garden late last night (11.30 pm) after I got back from the Marché des Producteurs in Le Dorat.

Marché des Producteurs, Le Dorat

Lots of people were there, as usual, but somehow they never seem to see me. In fact a friend messaged me to say that she had looked for me but not found me - and her SO was in my photo! (he's the one on the right in the white T-shirt). Sometimes I think I have an invisibility cloak!

My friend, Janet, and I had a great time despite that, and lots of laughs trying to see if there was any man there that we could face waking up to in the morning.  Needless to say - there wasn't!!!

I baked two cakes yesterday too - I was just in the mood and I had some huge free-range eggs I had bought in HyperU in St Junien that were just perfect for Delia's Cherry cake recipe.  Always a success!

I also made a Beetroot Chocolate cake (and judging from the number of beetroot in my potager, there will be many more) from this recipe...

Beetroot and chocolate cake

It was really chocolately and fudgy like the very best Brownie you have ever eaten.  I highly recommend it!  I am freezing the Cherry cake, but the chocolate one has already been half eaten by friends!

Well,  I'm off for a coffee at Mon Chic Cottage now, taking the rest of the cake with me for any lucky person who happens to be there.

Today there's No Music

For the first time in a very long while, I have not listened to any of my music. I'm not sure why - normally I play my music through iTunes all day.  I am a great lover of music, mainly modern 'pop' balladic-type songs - music with a message.  I recently bought some Adele, some Willie Nelson and an Ed Sheeran CD.

I often think that the music makes up for not having a Significant Other in my life, although sometimes it makes me sad just listening to it.  No music makes up for human company, especially the company of someone who shares your likes, your loves and your dreams and with whom you feel happy, peaceful and comfortable.

Of course I have my cat...

But we talk a different language and her dialogue mostly revolves around food and the little dead shrews she brings me to show what a brave hunter she is.  And that isn't the same thing as a meaningful dialogue with another human being.

I AM in a kind of limbo today as I have to take my car in this afternoon for its CT, which is the bi-annual test out here for road-worthiness.  I'm hoping it will pass!  So perhaps that is why I have hardly noticed the lack of music.  I'm just writing this quick blog post before going out, as I am a bit of tired of the crochet shawl I have been labouring over.  I'll show you a picture of that next time maybe. It's a new pattern called the Moonlit Shawl by Sandra Paul of Cherry Heart. I'm doing the 4ply version with some variegated sock wool in an Alpaca and Merinomix yarn. It's really soft and light.

Must go now for thatcar test - catch you later...

Bird on a Hot Tile Roof

Do you suppose birds can suffer from dementia?  This is the third day I have seen this sparrow come back with food in her/his beak for the babies in the nest, but seemingly unable to find the nest...

Bird on a hot tile roof

Just further along, on a slightly higher roof, I can hear little birdy babies cheeping frantically, so it seems like they are the ones waiting for their dinner...

But does the bird go there?  No he flies off, the food still in his beak, and the birdy babies fall silent.

Definitely No More

As I said last time, this dating lark online is scarey.

I got close to meeting someone really nice and then I got cold feet. I thought he would probably say goodbye or never contact me again after he got back to his normal life. So, rather than wait for that hurt, I ended it, and I wasn't very polite about it.

Now I am sad about it, but there is nothing I can do, except make sure it doesn't happen again.  I'm not going to do the online thing any more.

Anyway - I'll bounce back from that self-inflicted wound I expect and maybe there'll be a second chance, but I wish I had let the thing run its course...

Not everything is bad, though - here is tonight's dinner - spaghetti with chilli oil (my own piri-piris) and home-grown coriander...

Dating - No More

I don't think I'm cut out for this dating lark.

I guess I'm scared really.  When you've been so long on your own, the thought of offering yourself up, as it were, to someone you have never met, is pretty frightening.

At first it seems easy just chat -you can say anything you like. Talk as if the guy was an old friend, flirt a little maybe.  But this isn't a good idea. Best to take it slowly and steadily - find out lots about him.

Let him ask questions of you. If he doesn't  then he's probably:

  1. not interested in you
  2. very busy at the moment
  3. a supreme egotist
...but don't do what I did - tell him he is able to relate better to chickens than people!

No - that never works...

Dating or Just Dated (2)

News on the dating front - it's going reasonably well. More on that another time.

The weather here has been weird - very mixed. From bright, hot sunshine to cold, pouring rain; thunderstorms, lightning etc. But that's June for you.

One year we had hailstones as big as marbles!

But not this year, thank goodness!

I have been busy with the potager and everything's going fine.  The beetroot are growing apace and I don't know what I'm going to do with them all...

They are nuch bigger than when I took this photo - about golf ball size now.

Also I have been eating home-grown lettuce...

...and it is delicious!

On Monday I planted brussels sprouts (from a friend) and today I have planted out my tomatoes. They are really tiny, and I fear for their future!

The potatoes - out in the back - are doing well too and are in flower.

Oh, and I fogot to mention the butternut squash! so there'll be lots to eat in a few months!

A Sticky Situation

Sorry - I couldn't resist that as a title.

What I have learned today is that I will never pass my City and Guilds in floor tile laying. Sticky-backed floor tiles.

And I am running out of Sticky Label remover to clean my fingers :-(

I did the spare room bathroom at least 2 years ago - probably 3, which is why I have put this one off for so long.

It's a bit like that old music hall song, 'When father papered the ceiling'...

I don't know what the adhesive on the tiles is, but it's black and VERY sticky.

Last time I got it in  my hair and everywhere. Not doing that today....

And it's a very hot day. And I've just  broken the spacebar on this computer, so you may notice some very odd typing!

I think I'm going to leave it for now and take up the tiles I've done and just paint the contreplaqué (plywood).

It will soon be wine o'clock...
